Badlands, SD – Day 2

This guy scared me senseless. I was reaching down and spotted him inches away from the rock that I was going to grab. Fortunately, I already had a septarian nodule in my hand that I instinctively dropped between us before he could strike. Then I screamed like a little schoolgirl.
Mister Rattler was down in the arroyo at the base of this image.
The walls of the arroyo contained some crummy septarian nodules only suitable for blocking snake bites.
Just when you think you’ve seen everything, a lonely bull bison humps a post. I got it on video but it’s kinda shaky because we were laughing so hard.
A well-behaved bull.
Intrepid Explorer
The NPS really needs to hire me to map these fractures and create a 3d model …
Check out the continuity of the fractures.
Gotta love them fractures.
Note how the clay within the fractures is laminated along strike with the fractures.
Swallow Nests
OK, so I have a thing about these fractures.
… but they are so outrageously cool!
Goodbye to Fractureville.
