2021 Odyssey Epilog

As soon as we got home, a remodel was in order. Other than the kitchen, the entire unit was gutted. These pics (sans mattresses and seat cushions) show the current progress. From zero storage to ample storage. From crawling over each other when getting in and out of bed to a small hallway with separate bunks (not very romantic, but neither is asking your partner to get out of bed in the middle of the night so that you can go to the restroom).

Above: View from bow to stern showing two 75 x 27″ beds separated by aisle or one 75 x 27″ bed at end (perpendicular to camper axis) with room for two mini-couches. Note piano hinges providing access to new-found storage. GFI outlet on face of end-table is for CPAP machine. Rheostat controls red aisle light – to preserve night-vision when foraying into the darkness.

Above: View from stern to bow showing dining bench/chest and movable mini-table (sans cushions). Lots of storage below.

Above: Cell-phone charging/storage bins added to edge of dining bench. Note four USB charging outlets.

Above: There was a large gap between the air-conditioner and the stove and we kept accidentally dropping stuff into it. Removal of stuff (which landed on top of the furnace) required the removal of the microwave. A screen is affixed to the underside of the perforations that provide airflow to the air conditioner intake.

Above: View from stern to bow. Note steel shelving just below fan. These were a pre-departure addition that proved to be very useful.

Above: Remaining tasks include buying/replacing the piece-of-garbage Dometic “3-way” (gas/AC/DC) refrigerator/freezer. The replacement (ugh, another Dometic) is $1,900 (yikes!) and is limited to AC/DC but it includes a compressor rather than the problematic heat exchanger.

Another upcoming task is replacing the door on the lower-right with a slide-out “thing”.

Once the polycoat has dried, I’ll post some pics with the mattresses and bedding plus the shelving that we added above the sink.

Epilog Postscript Addendum: Dyan just sent me some pics to include …

Above: At this stage, the dumbass shower/toilet monstrosity had been removed. This has been replaced with an instant-setup mini-tent and a portable emergency toilet. Otherwise, we’ll do like the bears do. The removal of the shower/toilet plumbing on the underside also improved the off-road clearance. By the way, that type of prybar is what severed Dyan’s Achilles tendon 20 years ago when a cabinet fell off her townhouse wall.

Above: At this stage, the bed/end-table framing was almost completed.

Above: After re-wiring and installing masonite partitions.
